ESPN Drops Bombshell Prediction on Lions Veteran Taylor Decker
Nothing in the NFL lasts forever, and for the Detroit Lions, one of the toughest possible farewells this offseason could involve longtime cornerstone Taylor Decker.
Decker has been a constant presence in Detroit for ten years. Selected 16th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, he has started 140 regular-season games and protected the blind side through multiple rebuilds, coaching changes, and quarterback transitions. As it stands, he’s the longest-tenured player on the Lions’ roster.
But that era may be nearing its end.
ESPN analyst Aaron Schatz recently raised the possibility that Detroit could move on from Decker this offseason — assuming he doesn’t decide to retire first.
Why Decker Could Be on the Roster Bubble
Schatz’s projection points to a combination of age, durability concerns, and declining efficiency. Decker will be 33 next season and has dealt with recurring shoulder issues. While he earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2024, his overall performance dipped in 2025 when viewed through advanced analytics.
According to Schatz, Decker ranked 45th out of 69 offensive tackles in pass-block win rate last season and fell to 61st in run-block win rate. For a front office led by Brad Holmes, which heavily values data and long-term roster planning, those numbers are hard to overlook.
If Decker doesn’t choose to walk away on his own terms, Detroit may be forced to make a difficult, emotional decision — one that would close the chapter on a decade-long run by one of the franchise’s most dependable veterans.
