Greg Biffle Remembrance in Charlotte Stuns NASCAR — Urgent Tribute
The NASCAR community will gather January 16 for a public remembrance honoring Greg Biffle and the other lives lost in the Dec. 18 plane crash in Statesville. Reporter Bob Pockrass announced the ceremony will be held the morning of Jan. 16 at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte and will be open to the public and live-streamed; additional details are expected to be released. The announcement has intensified mourning across the sport as fans and colleagues prepare to pay their respects to one of NASCAR’s most influential drivers.
Biffle’s death in the Cessna crash has left many questions as investigators continue probing the cause. Early accounts indicate the aircraft lost one engine prior to landing, and veteran driver Kenny Wallace has suggested that low horsepower coming in for landing could be a primary factor. Authorities have not reached a definitive conclusion, and the investigation remains ongoing.
On track, Greg Biffle built a distinguished career: after rising through NASCAR’s lower series, he competed full time in the Cup Series from 2002 to 2022, collecting 19 Cup victories and previously winning titles in both the Truck Series and what is now the Xfinity Series. Beyond his results, Biffle was known for charitable work through the Greg Biffle Foundation and for his involvement with Lake Norman Humane, where he served on the board and helped fund facility improvements. His impact drew wide recognition across the sport, and even public figures expressed condolences following the crash.
Biffle is survived by his mother, Sally Biffle; his brother Jeffrey Biffle (Kelly); and members of his extended family, including nieces Jordyn Carpenter (David) and Megan Waldron (Klynten) and their children Jack Carpenter and Charlotte. As the community organizes the Charlotte remembrance, fans and peers will have the chance to honor Biffle’s racing achievements, his off-track philanthropy, and the personal legacy he leaves behind.
