Lions to Interview New York Giants Interim Head Coach
The Detroit Lions are continuing their search for a new offensive coordinator and are set to interview New York Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka later this week. Multiple reports indicate the meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, as Detroit evaluates potential candidates to fill the vacancy on its coaching staff.
Kafka is drawing interest from multiple teams, as he is also expected to interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following their recent coaching overhaul, which included changes on the offensive side of the ball. In addition, Giants general manager Joe Schoen confirmed that Kafka will receive consideration for New York’s permanent head coaching position.
Schoen praised Kafka’s leadership and offensive impact during his time as interim head coach, noting a significant improvement in production compared to the previous season. Under Kafka’s guidance, the Giants finished 13th in total offense after ranking near the bottom a year earlier, while also placing among the league’s top teams in rushing. Schoen highlighted Kafka’s ability to manage play-calling responsibilities while also overseeing broader team decisions, including handling defensive changes late in the season.
Despite mixed results in the win-loss column, Kafka expressed pride in the progress made by the Giants after former head coach Brian Daboll was dismissed earlier in the year. He emphasized the resilience of the players and staff, particularly in closing the season with two strong victories. Kafka also said the experience expanded his leadership skill set and boosted his confidence, adding that managing multiple phases of the team prepared him for a future head coaching opportunity.
Before entering the coaching ranks, Kafka was selected in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft and spent time on several NFL practice squads during his playing career, including stints with the Eagles, Patriots, Jaguars, Buccaneers, Vikings, Titans, and Bengals.
