Warriors’ DNP Sparks Outrage as McCants Demands ‘Free Kuminga’
The Golden State Warriors’ blowout loss didn’t just raise eyebrows because of the scoreline — it reignited a growing controversy around Jonathan Kuminga and coach Steve Kerr. After a 131–94 defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder, attention quickly shifted from the result to Kuminga’s surprising absence, a decision that has now sparked public backlash from former players and fans alike.
With Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green all sidelined on the first night of a back-to-back, Kuminga was widely expected to play a larger role. Kerr even said earlier in the day that the 23-year-old would “for sure” see the floor. However, just hours before tipoff, Kuminga was added to the injury report with lower back soreness and ultimately ruled out. Kerr later said Kuminga was hurt before the game and admitted he was unsure how serious the issue might be — comments that only intensified skepticism around the decision.
Former NBA guard Rashad McCants was among the loudest critics. He took to social media to call out Kerr directly, posting, “Steve you are not fooling nobody. Karma is right around the corner. #freekuminga.” His reaction echoed a broader frustration over Kuminga’s shrinking role within the Warriors’ rotation.
Kuminga’s recent usage paints a concerning picture. He has been a DNP in nine of the past ten games and hasn’t played since December 18, when he logged limited minutes in a narrow loss to the Phoenix Suns. A knee injury earlier in the season disrupted his momentum, and since returning, his minutes, efficiency, and place in the rotation have steadily declined.
The situation is further complicated by Kuminga’s contract and trade status. He is on a two-year deal with a team option in the second season and becomes eligible to be traded on January 15. Kerr has previously questioned Kuminga’s fit in certain lineups, particularly regarding spacing, and noted that the forward needs consistent rhythm rather than short stints.
As the Warriors sit at 18–17, pressure is mounting. With trade eligibility approaching and Kuminga’s role unclear, the coming weeks could determine whether Golden State recommits to his development — or moves on entirely.
